Jack Goldfield (1926 - 1991)
Inducted 1988 | Basketball & Softball
Jack Goldfield was born October 30, 1926 in Ottawa, ON. He was a very involved community member throughout his life. In 1949, his team, R&A Cohen, won the Men’s Softball League championship.
In 1953, he was Scout Leader for the 39th Boy Scout Troop, Ottawa’s first Jewish Scout troop.
In 1954, Jack was part of the Ottawa Jewish Community Centre’s winning basketball team. The team won 74-71 in overtime against Lionel Tanner’s team. They were awarded their trophy at the annual basketball banquet on April 15, 1954.
In 1980, Jack was a part of the grand opening of the new Jewish Community Centre Fitness Testing Centre. The fitness testing centre arose with Jack and his brother Morley’s initiative, along with Harold Cohen, who felt that the Jewish community was lacking in adequate and safe equipment. Health and fitness screening including cardiac screening was made available to the Ottawa Jewish community because of this initiative.
When a new baseball diamond was opened in 1985, Jack participated in an Oldtimers Softball Game. This game also opened the Ottawa Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Ottawa Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
